St Paul Flag

In 1932, the association of the St. Paul Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsored a city flag contest. The winner of the contest, a College of St. Catherine student, was Gladys Mittle. According to the Chamber of Commerce, the meanings assigned to the flag design include the following:

•     Blue Stripe in Middle: The Mississippi River
•     Cabin: The St. Paul chapel that was established by Lucien Galtier in 1841
•     Dome: St. Paul as capital of Minnesota
•     Gold Stripes: The future
•     North Star: Represents the state of Minnesota
•     Red Shield: The spirit and progress of St. Paul
•     Winged Wheel: St. Paul’s status as a transportation hub in the state
