The history of the name and mascot for the Zephyrs runs deep. Our exclusive Zephyr train logo was used for a short period of time post WWII. Here's a snippet from a Mahtomedi historian:
The Lincoln Zephyr became very popular in its short life-time, reigniting sales of Lincolns at dealerships across the country. Thus, it was a clever idea for students from Lincolntown High School to use a Lincoln Zephyr as their symbol for speed and strength.
While Big Ray was researching the history of the Lincoln Zephyr at MHS, he recalls discovering several photos of a Lincoln Zephyr convertible parked at the sidelines of several MHS sporting events, and even a photo of the MHS band all sitting inside the Zephyr.
I suppose, after the end of World War II, the Lincoln Zephyr didn't look quite so powerful anymore; so the symbol was changed to a train (although I don't believe any of the "zephyr" trains ever passed through Mahtomedi).
